Safety Tips
What to do if you smell propane or gas:
Put out all smoking materials and other open flames.
DO NOT turn on or off any electrical equipment that could create a spark, including telephones, thermostats, light switches, flashlights, etc. Operating these could trigger an explosion or fire.
Immediately evacuate the area and DO NOT attempt to find the source of the leak. Safely bring all family members and pets away from the building.
Shut off the main gas supply on your propane tank by rotating the valve to the right (clockwise). Only attempt this if it is safe to do so.
Contact Quality Propane and inform us about the leak right away. If you cannot reach us for any reason, dial 911.
Stay outside and do not enter the building. Wait until an emergency responder or service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
Have your system checked as soon as possible. Before you use any propane appliances, you must have it examined to ensure that it is leak free and safe to use.

General Propane Safety

A propane leak will smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. Since propane is naturally odorless, a chemical called mercaptan is added to detect gas leaks. This chemical is completely harmless and gives propane its signature smell. It is important to familiarize yourself with the signs of a leak to prepare you and your family for the necessary steps to stay safe.
In the event that you do smell propane or gas, follow the steps above.

To check how much fuel is in your propane tank, follow these steps:
Locate your propane tank and find the blue lid.
Lift the lid on the top of the tank and look for a small, round gauge.
On the gauge, look for an arrow that is pointing to a number indicating the percentage of gas in your tank.
A full tank of propane will read 80%.
In the event that you do smell propane or gas, follow the steps above.

If you suspect a gas leak, it is important to turn off the propane tank if it it safe to do so. To turn off your propane tank:
Lift the blue lid on top of your tank.
Locate the tank valve.
Turn the valve to the right (clockwise) until you cannot turn it anymore.

Propane Weather Safety

During the warmer seasons, extreme weather is not uncommon. Hurricanes and tornadoes can all cause severe damage to your and your home. In some cases, downed trees or debris can result in power outages.
You may choose to install a permanent propane-powered generator with your system in case of emergencies. Some may choose to use a portable generator instead. No matter your choice, it is crucial to maintain safety during hurricanes and tornadoes:
Create a safety plan to follow in the event of an emergency.
Keep a list of contacts when evacuating your home, including Quality Propane and emergency services.
Know how to turn off your propane tank if it is necessary.
Never use portable generators indoors or in an enclosed space. This can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and possibly death.
Contact Quality Propane if you notice any damage to the tank or nearby gas lines.

Floods can cause damage not only to your propane tank, but to your entire system. Water can leak into various equipment such as regulators and generators, causing permanent damage that creates an extreme safety hazard. Due to the rapid force of floods, a propane tank can become dislodged from its original location. This poses a high risk for others in your area, as a dislodged tank can hit nearby vehicles, power lines, and other objects in its path.
To maintain a safe environment during a flood, here are some steps you can take:
Anchor all tanks located in a flood zone. This prevents them from dislodging during a flood.
Exercise extreme caution if you must evacuate. It is possible for floods to displace dirt, causing unanchored tanks and gas lines to shift.
Stay away from downed power lines, as they can spark when coming into contact with water.
Know how to turn off your propane tank if it is necessary.
Never use portable generators indoors or in an enclosed space. This can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and possibly death.
